Generally, water with a carbonate hardness between 4 and 10 dKH is considered ideal. Ponds with a carbonate hardness below 4 dKH are considered dangerously unstable. There is a risk of an acid crash. This means that, under strong sunlight, biological decalcification occurs and the pH value rises above 9, which can cause the death of all fish and other pond life. Schuroco's Pond Stabilizer also delays the rise in pH value.
