Unscrew the handle and upper cover of the cylinder. 2. Insert the connecting rod into the upper cover and screw the handle back on. 3. Place a small piece of clean absorbent cotton in the bottom of the cylinder. 4. Push the lubricated piston into the cylinder and tighten the upper cover. 5. Stand the cylinder upright on a stable surface. 6. Press the piston handle sharply and quickly toward the bottom of the cylinder. Rapid compression increases the gas temperature and the absorbent cotton will ignite, demonstrating conversion of mechanical energy to heat.
