The organic meadowsweet from My Cosmetik is a food supplement in the form of capsules, formulated on the basis of the flowering top of the plant. The meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria or Spiraea ulmaria), also called ulmar, is a perennial herbaceous plant with a fibrous root, whose stems, erect and not very branched, measure approximately 1m in height. The meadowsweet has been used for a very long time for its medicinal properties, in particular by the druids for whom it represented a sacred plant, and more particularly since the Middle Ages. It is then used to accelerate the eruption of measles and smallpox, to fight against rheumatism, to lower fever, as an antispasmodic, to treat attacks of cystitis, to treat hemorrhoids, etc. According to the “signature theory”, as the meadowsweet grows in water or in any case on wet soils, it was intended to treat all kinds of ailments caught when we stay too long in a humid environment. The chemists of the 19th century then studied more closely the composition of the queen of the meadows and discovered one of its active ingredients: salicylic acid which, after being chemically modified by Félix Hoffmann in 1897, gave acetylsalicylic acid, less caustic. BAYER laboratories marketed this molecule under the name of the famous “aspirin”, the name of which indeed comes from that of the meadowsweet: Spiraea.
