Moulded excellantly and matched with a mahogany chess board, this Canterbury Cathedral themed chess set is one of the standout sets in the regency collection. Henry IV is the King in this themed chess set, the proprietor of a reign Shakespeare famously remarked “uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.” After years of warfare King Henry IV would be buried at Canterbury Cathedral next to this themed chess set’s queen, Joan of Navarre. Elegantly moulded in striking detail, the granddaughter of the King of France was an aspirational woman and had her fare share of works written about her as well. Equally as well storied was Thomas Becket, one of the most famous Archbishops ever to hold office at Canterbury. The hand painted bishop, in both red and blue, holds a bible in one hand and offers a blessing in the other. Next to the Bishop is an armoured Knight inspired by Edward the Black Prince. The intricate detailing of this themed chess pieces is astonishing, and an apt memorandum to one of England’s finest military leaders. On every corner of this themed chess set is the imperious Bell Harry Tower of Canterbury Cathedral. Made from almost half a million bricks, this noble tower has been painstakingly moulded by the craftsmen of SAC. On both sides of this themed chess set sit eight Cathedral Vergers, which make up the front row of pawns.
