Because the rods share the same thickness and length, differences in material produce observable variations in heat transfer along the rod. Setup and procedure: Place the instrument on a desk in balance. Spread a small amount of butter on the concave surface of each heatconducting rod. Insert a match so the match head sits upright on the concave surface. Use an alcohol lamp to heat the heat storage block. After a period, observe how matches drop onto each heatconducting rod and compare the results to evaluate thermal conductivity differences. Care and maintenance: After the experiment, allow the heatconducting rod to cool completely. Wipe clean, apply oil, and store. Handle the instrument carefully to avoid dropping or striking the heatconducting rod. Practical use scenarios: In a science classroom, demonstrate and compare the thermal conductivity of different solid materials using a controlled geometry. In a guided lab, students observe heat transfer along identically sized rods to understand how material properties affect conduction.
