It favors cell reproduction. Sphagnum is large moss with large, empty cells and open pores that easily absorb and retain water like a sponge up to twenty times its weight. Saturation of the moss with water prevents air transit to the point that sphagnum strata at a short distance from the surface (young peat) are anoxic.
