There are two main types of cinnamon spice: Cassia Cinnamon and Ceylon Cinnamon. The cinnamon bars we produce at Lamberts contain a high concentration of Cinnamomum Cassia, or Cassia Cinnamon, which is the variety proven to have the broadest beneficial properties supported by numerous clinical studies. We use the correct species and the relevant part of the Cinnamomum Cassia plant, since our extract is obtained from the tree bark (and not the oil), which is the essential part and responsible for the properties of cinnamon. Regarding volatile components, the chemical composition of cinnamon essential oils depends on the part of the plant from which they are extracted. In the essential oil of the bark, the most abundant component is cinnamaldehyde, which is why this is the part used in Lamberts standardized cinnamon extracts. A standard water/ethanol extraction, known as Soxhlet extraction, results in a cinnamaldehyde content ranging from 62% to 73%. To make a brief and simple comparison, when looking at the raw materials and comparing the two main types of cinnamon, Cassia Cinnamon has a stronger flavor than the Ceylon variety and 95% of its oil is cinnamaldehyde. In Ceylon cinnamon, however, we find that only 50-63% of its oil is cinnamaldehyde, which explains its milder flavor. Therefore, the variety of raw material we use in Lamberts Cassia Cinnamon Extract has significantly higher concentrations of cinnamaldehyde. We use a pure, high-strength extract of cinnamon bark, not to be confused with culinary cinnamon. Our tablets are coated so they are tasteless (although they do have a pleasant cinnamon scent) and easy to swallow. As a helpful note, we add that we have been asked about the coumarin content in our products, as it tends to be higher in the Cassia variety. The pharmaceutical-grade Cassia Cinnamon extract we use is tested to ensure negligible coumarin content, and we confirm that although all cinnamon species naturally contain some coumarin, our products contain less than 0.5% of this compound, so it will not cause problems associated with high coumarin intake. As with all our plant extracts, this product is manufactured to the highest standards of purity and safety in UK factories operating under GMP standards. Few companies manufacture all of their herbal products in the form of standardized extracts, but at Lamberts, we believe it's essential. Therefore, while the "whole herb" alternative sounds great, it's simply the dried plant material, which will provide primarily fiber and few active ingredients (and that's if it can be digested). Lamberts plant extracts are concentrated, soluble, and a guarantee of safety and efficacy. It is recommended to take 1 tablet daily with a meal.
