Unscrew the handle and remove the upper cover of the plexiglass cylinder. Insert the connecting rod into the upper cover, then screw the handle back on. 2. Place a small piece of clean absorbent cotton about the size of a small bean on the bottom of the cylinder. Other tinder materials with similar or lower autoignition temperature may also be used. No tinder is supplied. 3. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly as lubrication between the piston and the cylinder to improve sealing and smooth motion. 4. Push the piston into the cylinder and tighten the upper cover. Stand the cylinder upright and press the piston handle quickly and firmly to compress the air. The rapid compression raises the temperature and will ignite the cotton. Usage notes Exhaust the cylinder before starting an experiment to remove trapped air as directed in the setup steps. Lubricate the piston lightly with petroleum jelly to reduce friction and improve sealing. Use under appropriate supervision and in a controlled setting suitable for open flame demonstrations. Typical applications Classroom physics demonstration for junior or middle school students to illustrate energy conversion and gas laws.
